On December 9th, 18–something this poem — “The Charge of the Light Brigade” by Lord Tennyson Alfred — was written about the battle of Balaclava during the Crimean War. Thus as most of us have no idea what this war was even about, we will instead gather this week to celebrate another great week of hashing and drinking beer led by Stoned Age, Virgin hare Just Patrick, and Shanghai Man. Below is a hash rendition of the poem:
I
Half a km, half a km,
Half a km onward,
All in the rings of Beijing
Ran the 32 hashers.
“Forward, to the beer stops!
Charge for the beers!” Stoned Age said.
Into the Hutongs of Beijing
Ran the 32 Hashers.
IV
Flashed all their mugs,
Flooded as they hung in air
Filled by the world’s best hares,
Charging through the smog, while
All the world wondered.
Shanghai Man in the battery-smoke
Right through Dongzhimen they frolicked;
Pickles and Crashie
Panting as they tried to keep Dry Hole’s stroke
Shattered and sundered.
Then they ran back,
Losing no one to Paddies.
VI
When can their glory fade?
O the wild charge they made!
All the world wondered.
Honour the charge Just Patrick has led!
Honour the Hashers,
Noble 32!
