These are the times we Americans gather together to be thankful and run 5Ks. And we have a lot to be thankful for… the presidential erection, turkey-induced indigestion, Yanjing, that magical time when the first Beijing snowfall is half-melted and slushy and leaks into your shoes, you get the point. But do you know the true story of the first Thanksgiving?
Legend has it that the Pilgrims landed on a rock on the beach in a place they thought was Virgin-ia, and were starving until the locals taught them to live off the land and eat pumpkin pie. But, in fact, the Vikings ‘discovered’ America 500 years before, and they too had a Thanksgiving feast of their own (in Canada no less). And instead of turkey, archaeologists concur that they probably ate lamb hotpot.
Luckily for us, our very own favorite Swede has returned to help us celebrate the first Thanksgiving. Bjorn Again is back in his native Lido after months away in the Old Country (or Thailand, we’re not quite sure). Let us go to his environment and give thanks for his return! Let us re-enact the first Vikings in their quest to eat the local food and drink! And let us ever be thankful for well-marked trails and the good company of returning Hashers!! ON ON!!!
